    Opening on 8 November 1967 the BBC Radio Leicester was the first BBC Local Radio station in Leicestershire in Britain. When Leicester was captured by Danish Vikings it was elevated to a bishopric in either 679 or 680 and survived until the 9th century. Although this position was short-lived, their settlement became one of the Five Burghs of the Danelaw. Fled to Dorchester-on-Thames and Leicester, the Saxon bishop did not become a bishopric again until the Church of St Martin became Leicester Cathedral in 1927. Under the name Ligeraceaster in the early 10th century, the settlement was recorded.
