Idi Amin announced that the entire Asian community in Uganda had 90 days to leave the country in 1972. A campaign aimed at dissuading Ugandan Asians from migrating to Leicester was launched by the Leicester City Council in Leicestershire shortly thereafter. As it slowly found, from around the year 50 onwards, as the tribal capital of the Corieltauvians under the name Ratae Corieltauvorum, it remains unclear whether the Romans fortified and garrisoned the location in Leicestershire. Have been damaged by fire are former factories including some on Frog Island and at Donisthorpe Mill.

Following the changes in 1892, with the annexation of the remainder of Evington, Humberstone, Beaumont Leys, and part of Braunstone, a second major extension to the boundaries took place in 1935 in Leicestershire. Throughout the 19th century the borough had been expanding but grew most notably when it annexed Belgrave, Aylestone, North Evington, Knighton, and Stoneygate in 1892. Due in part to the University of Leicester in Leicestershire being one of the few universities in the UK to specialise in space sciences, it is also the address of the National Space Centre off Abbey Lane. Opening on 8 November 1967 the BBC Radio Leicester was the first BBC Local Radio station in Leicestershire in Britain. When Leicester was captured by Danish Vikings it was elevated to a bishopric in either 679 or 680 and survived until the 9th century. Although this position was short-lived, their settlement became one of the Five Burghs of the Danelaw. Fled to Dorchester-on-Thames and Leicester, the Saxon bishop did not become a bishopric again until the Church of St Martin became Leicester Cathedral in 1927. Under the name Ligeraceaster in the early 10th century, the settlement was recorded.

Cardinal Thomas Wolsey was arrested on charges of treason and taken from York Place on 4 November 1530. He fell ill on his way south to face dubious justice at the Tower of London. Concerned enough, the group escorting him stopped at Leicester to rest at Leicester Abbey in Leicestershire. The address of these two universities, University of Leicester, which attained its Royal Charter in 1957 and was ranked 12th by the 2009 Complete University Guide, and De Montfort University, which opened in 1969 as Leicester Polytechnic and achieved university status in 1992, is Leicester.

With the start of Eurostar international services from London St Pancras International and in November 2007, Leicester railway station in Leicestershire has gained associations at St Pancras station to Lille, Brussels and Paris onwards as the rail network in Leicester is of growing importance. A professional football club based at the King Power Stadiumis Leicester City F.C. who plays in the Premier League. Rugby club Leicester Tigers and football club Leicester City's address is Leicester.
